Who can benefit from Pilates?

The short answer is everyone! In the media, you may see images of beautiful young people, lithe dancers and brawny athletes doing Pilates in exotic locations, but the reality is that Pilates offers advantages to everyone regardless of age or current fitness (or glamour) level.

Newbies. If you’ve never worked out (or if it’s been too long since you last exercised), Pilates is the perfect introduction to fitness because it is low impact and uses bodyweight only. This means you can ease into shape without risking injury with heavy weights. Also, the functional nature of Pilates workouts will provide an immediate enhancement to your well-being. Your balance will improve, and you’ll experience an increase in energy and a calmer demeanour. You’ll look better, too!

Women. Many women are drawn to Pilates because it creates long, lean muscles, improves flexibility and aids weight loss. But the benefits go further because research suggests that Pilates can help reduce menstrual pain. Pilates can also help pregnant and postpartum women by safely strengthening their core and conditioning their pelvic floor.

Men. Even men who already work out or do sports can benefit from Pilates classes because of the compound nature of the exercises and the focus on the abdominal muscles. There is no such thing as too much core strength. In fact, competitive weightlifters have recently discovered that extra emphasis on core stability can increase their overall lifting ability, plus strong abs help you avoid injuries.

Teens. If you know a teenager, you can give them the gift of a lifetime by introducing them to Pilates. Starting Pilates as a teen will help them develop a lifelong passion for exercise and holistic well-being. Suna has been teaching Pilates at Kristin school for more than a decade.

Who can’t do Pilates? In reality, almost everyone can do Pilates. This is true even if you have suffered an injury or have age-related physical limitations. Many physios refer their patients to Suna for rehab work, and we have developed modifications to all our exercises to allow people with restrictions or injuries to get a complete workout.

Does it sound too good to be true? Come see for yourself at Suna Pilates. Let us help you create a happier, healthier body! Trial packs start at $60.
